How to Tell Your Family & Friends You're Eloping

So you’ve decided that you’re going to elope but you’re not sure how your family and friends will respond to the news? Whether you’re eloping just the two of you or choose to invite a couple loved ones to your elopement day, it’s important to think about how you want to communicate the news about your plans.

You can choose to share the news before you say I do, or wait until after its official to break the news. There are pros and cons to both decisions but what’s most important is that you stay true to what you feel is best for you. Here are a couple recommendations to help make those conversations go a bit smoother.

Tip One

My first recommendation is to drop some hits. Maybe you have a family member who believes you should have a traditional wedding and is skeptical of the idea of eloping. You can start by dropping hits during your visits with them. This will help reduce any objections or surprises when you decide it’s finally time to break the news.

Tip Two

Tell them in person or on video chat if you’re not close by. This will not only allow them to see your own excitement for the day, but you will be able to share all the deets and answer any questions they have.

Tip Three

Be sure to share your reasons why. There are plenty of reasons couples decide to elope such as money, spending more time as a couple then with guests, making the day feel true to your relationship, wanting an stress-free experience, or craving a unique experience in the great outdoors. Relaying your reasons to your family and friends will allow them to better understand your decision, and avoid any misconceptions that you did this to exclude them.

Tip Four

Include them in the planning. Although your family and friends may not be there on the day, you can still have them pick out a location, go shopping with you, help decide on florals, and ask for their advice. You could even have them there to get ready with you on the day. There are no rules to eloping so make it your own.

Tip Five

Share the photos. Incredible photos that capture your genuine joy and excitement fro your day will allow your family and friends to feel like they were right there with you. Some couples even choose to use a photo album be their way to announce to their family & friends that they eloped.

Tip Six

At the end of the day, this day is about you. It’s good to emphasize with your family and friends who are upset about the news of your choice to elope, but don’t forget that at the end of the day your wedding is about you, your partner, and the love you two share. Your day should feel authentic and true to you. It may take some time but ultimately, your family and friends will come around to be loving and supportive of your decision.
