Canadian Rocky Mountain Wedding

For today's post, we head up north to share Jessica + Chris: Rocky Mountain Wedding at the Sawridge Inn, Alberta with images courtesy of Milton Photography. If you follow the spine of the Rockies north, it leads up into Canada, and the location for today's feature. Jasper sits at the top of a classic area, the Icefields Parkway, and would make for an epic road trip. Bonus points if you do it on touring bikes. I was lucky enough to drive up that road and then head west towards the coast, where I put my truck on a ferry headed to Alaska. But, that story is for another blog. Let's get back to the event on hand, nestled in the most majestic chain of mountains I've ever seen.

Destination Mountain Weddings

If you've found this blog, you're probably researching planning a destination wedding in Breckenridge, or one of the other mountain towns of Summit County. This location in Canada looks amazing, but if you can't make it up that way, perhaps an elopement to Colorado is all you really need. Right now, couples are contacting us and planning their winter getaway. Some are taking steps to finalize their summer wedding at a private rental home. Options are endless. We are, however, aware that all of this takes time, and so we've created custom wedding packages that help you save time and money. Contact us to learn more!

A year before the wedding Garry (Jessica’s Dad) and I spoke about destination weddings and what made them so great was that the family that hadn’t met yet get an opportunity to get to know each other at a resort for a week instead of a 1 day wedding and a “nice to meet you… see you at the reunion”. Jess and I really wanted to have that but in a place we love so much.

We invited people to come to Jasper and camp leading up to the wedding. We had 50 people join us at Whistlers campground and we had drinks, played games, went biking, hiking and just really got to know each other. Almost everything we had for decor was either made by us, family or purchased second hand from a previous wedding. We decorated everything ourselves.

Overlooking the the mountains behind us at the Maligne Lookout in Jasper on a nice sunny day surrounded by our family and friends. Our good friend Jessica Marsh singing and playing songs for us to walk down the aisle to. Our dogs walking down the aisle by family. I remember taking small moments to breathe and take it all in and just be content being in the Mountains and with her in front of me.

All of our hard work into the set-up and decor came together and looked amazing. Music is a huge part of our lives so we wanted to bring that into everything we could. We asked our friends Pete and Denise from 100 Mile House to play our first dances. They learned a few songs we has requested (even an acoustic version of Daft Punk Get Lucky to lead into the dance part of the night) It was really something that they agreed to come and play. THEN, to have JP Hoe surprise us on top of that and play 4 songs of his own was just unbelievable… We had daydreamed about something like that happening… but when does an artist come and play a wedding? Really! Thanks to Jessica’s sister Carly who set up the surprise and my brother Blake for the last minute change to the have him play during the slideshow. It meant so much to us.

Of course we’re bias but we feel that there are a lot of unique things about the reception. From the format of the night (slideshow at the very start) to the music, the food, the decor. We’ve heard from so many people afterwards how great the food was and how they had so much fun. Maybe it was just me but you could really feel the love in the room. We spent a lot of time (Jessica and I) designing the look of the wedding. We wanted it to be unique to us and we also wanted it to be things we did on our own.

It turns out our favourite part of the day is the same! The anticipation and the final walking down the aisle / waiting for each other. Watching her walk down the aisle and watching me at the end of the aisle waiting with all of our friends and family surrounding us. All of the guests around us. The weather was perfect and the setting was incredible. It all came together perfectly and we both remember just feeling so content in those moments.
