Silverthorne, Colorado Destination Wedding

Today's post is all about Natalie + Kurt: Summit County Wedding in Silverthorne, Colorado with images courtesy of Timothy Faust Photography. This couple chose to have their ceremony and reception at a private residence in the presence of the Gore Range. On the eastern side of the valley is the Williams Fork Range, the closest peak being Ptarmigan. No need for a big venue with this small and intimate gathering. Nothing wrong with that, it's what the couple wanted. And, I've said it before, and I'll say it again, there are no rules anymore. You can have the wedding you want. Don't listen to anyone telling you that you need to have it in a  big venue. You can even choose to elope if that's your desire. It's what you want. It's the start of your new life.

Kurt and Natalie had a small intimate backyard wedding in Summit County Colorado. The location was a private residence in Silverthorne, Colorado. From Tim's blog... "Kurt and Natalie contacted me about photographing their smaller destination wedding in Silverthorne, Colorado. They both grew up and live in my home state of Illinois, but came here because the love the mountains as much as I do. Their parents, siblings, and friends traveled here as well, and they rented a large house over looking a lake in Silverthorne, with an amazing view of Buffalo Mountain in the background."

Elise + Kevin at the Grand Hall at Copper Mountain, Colorado

We went from an extended Fall straight into Winter with over 70" of snow in the last few weeks, and that means it's perfect timing to share some photos from Elise + Kevin at the Grand Hall at Copper Mountain, Colorado, images courtesy of Julia Vandenoever PhotographyThe ceremony took place at a new church in Summit County, the Our Lady of Peace Church in Silverthorne. Just after the ceremony is snowing heavily and the wintery experience was completely visible as the snow fell outside the windows at the reception venue. Snow cats traveled up and down the ski slopes just outside, maintaining the snow for all the skiers and snowboarders that visit the Copper Mountain Ski Resort. If you're looking to put together a package for your destination wedding in the mountain towns near Breckenridge, Summit County and the Vail Valley, then please check out the first of our packages that just went live (more to be added soon), or contact us with your event information to get the planning process started. Our inspiration for our wedding was elegant simplicity. We were excited to throw a huge party for all the people we love most in this world, however tried to stay simple to help with cost and still be classic. I wanted lots of dynamics and textures so had all my bridesmaids pick out their own dresses with different fabrics and colors in the blueish green realm. Groomsmen just wore a black tux and we found ties for them. I would tell future brides don't stress and vendors now what they are doing. We didn't have a tasting Our dessert was homemade We never meet our videographer until the day of our wedding We didn't send a list of our favorite music to the dj My number one priority was amazing pictures and video, Kevin's was good food and open bar for the guests. Having a wedding In the mountain breath taking, we highly recommend it! Flowers: We wanted our bouquets looked like little mountain tops with the soft white and peeking greens and browns. Snow was a must and it happened almost like we planned it...it was magical.

{real Mountain Wedding} Dani + Joe: Ceremony at St. Mary's Catholic Church / Reception at the Silverthorne Pavilion

This real mountain wedding photoblog is all about the wedding day of a local Summit County couple who were married in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Breckenridge.  The reception was held later at the Silverthorne Pavilion.

We received a submission via Two Bright Lights from April O'Hare Photography and these beautiful photos tell the story of Dani and Joe.  Our goal is to show more real mountain weddings, so if you or someone you know was recently married in the Breckenridge and Vail areas, please contact us!

I always like to hear the stories from other vendors, and feel like it's a good way to get to know them better.  If you like these photos, please mention this blog when contacting April.  Thanks a lot!

Q. What tips / advice would you give to a couple considering a destination wedding in Keystone or Summit County?

A. While I haven't personally planned my own wedding in the mountains, I would definitely advise a bride and groom on giving their guests who are not from the area as much info about preparing for high altitude as possible. I'll never forget the wedding I did where the groom's mom got a severe case of altitude sickness and almost wasn't able to witness the ceremony. Some guests may not realize that there are things they can do to avoid it like drink a ton of water and go easier on the alcohol than they would if they live closer to sea level.

Q. What are some fun ideas for engagement photoshoots in the mountains?

A. This isn't exactly unique, but I cannot get enough Aspens in my photos. Love those trees at any time of the year. They're just gorgeous.

And, I don't know if this counts as "the mountains" but I think it's close enough. I have been dying to photograph an engagement session in Manitou Springs. They have this really beautiful vibrant shopping district set against the beautiful mountains as well as a really kick ass gigantic old school penny arcade too! Hit me up if you want to do your engagement photos there!

Q. What kinds of questions would you recommend the bride and groom ask their potential photographers?

A. I think one of the best things you can ask your photographer is to see a few full weddings so you can see more than just the best shots shown in their portfolio and blog. You want to make sure they have consistent work throughout the day and that the images taken during the reception when there is normally less light still look good. It doesn't hurt to see if they have photographed at your venue too. If they have then it's nice to see how their photos turned out when they photographed there.

Q. What's the best way to work with wedding photographers?

A. Try to be open to their timeline suggestions. Most wedding photographers realize that your wedding day is not meant to be one long photoshoot, but if you suprise them with a huge formals list on the day of and haven't built in enough time to take those photos you will be disappointed that they aren't able to get through all of them. Your photographer is also likely to have some good ideas regarding what time of day will look good for your pictures. Often the prettiest light falls during your reception. If you are flexible and take 10-15 min away from the party for some shots of the two of you alone you will likely be pleasantly surprised with the results. Some of my favorite shots of the newlyweds are taken during that short window of time near sunset.

Q. Favorite part of Colorado? Favorite Restaurant in Denver? And, one more. Last concert seen.

A. Oh man, favorite part of Colorado? I think that depends on my mood:) I have to admit to being a a city girl at heart so spending a summer day walking around shopping in the South Broadway area in the Baker neighborhood and sipping on a mocha or stopping in for a microbrew at The Walnut Room is hard to beat.

Although I will say that I LOVE being a wedding photographer in Colorado because it gives me an excuse to get up to the mountains on a regular basis:) I am particularly fond of going to hot springs. Strawberry Springs in Steamboat is high up on my list but I still have many that I want to visit like Hot Sulphur Springs which is closer to Keystone.

My favorite kind of food is Mexican and I'm partial to green chili. In my opinion, the best green chili in Denver can be found at Santiago's. I go to the one on Leetsdale or the one on 6th and Santa Fe all the time:)

As for concerts I haven't been going to as many as I used to when I was younger. I think the last one I went to was Snoop Dogg at the Fillmore. And I'm thinking about maybe going to see Morrissey in February.

What Daddy's Will Do For Their Little Girls. Arches Handmade With Love.

Happy 4th of July!  The parade and airshow just wrapped up, but there's still plenty going on around town.  Make sure to visit the local sites for our mountain towns to see all the different options!  Today's blog is about highlighting what fathers have been making for their daughters at some of  the recent mountain weddings.  In the last 2 weeks we have seen an arch made of Pine Beatle wood with a matching cupcake stand, and another lodge pole arch that was more rustic.  Both were beautiful.

With the arch already constructed by dear old Dad, Dina attaches flowers to create custom floral decor for the outdoor ceremony at the family's home.  This remodeled home overlooks the Green Mountain Reservoir, which is north of Silverthorne. The reception was then held at the Raven Golf Club.

In the image below, you can see the other arch that was made, and definitely seems more rustic.  What do you think?  Some venues have arches and / or designated outdoor ceremony locations, while others allow you to customize the setting.  Certain venues have gorgeous flower beds, trees or hanging baskets that can look just fine with nothing else, but custom florals and decor will help the branding of the event, and will further carry your color palette throughout the event.

Did your Dad make your arch?  If another family member is building or making something custom, we'd love to share it with our readers!  Please submit your handmade wedding item photos with any sweet words and descriptions.  We would love to hear your story.

New to Summit County, Colorado this year are the Ice Castles in Silverthorne.  Located just north of the Silverthorne Pavillion, this unique setting is created by hand by "Brent Christensen, Ice Castle creator, started experimenting with icicles to create a large ice formation in his front yard. His children called it “an ice castle,” and the name stuck."

I write an article on Examiner.com, as I have been selected as the Breckenridge Wedding Planner Examiner, and Kim Larson of Life is Art Photo saw my post and decided it would be a great fit for her clients.  We appreciate Kim giving us a shout out at the end of her blog, and hope any other readers, photographers or couples that gain inspiration from this blog will share their photos for us to share in the future!

The following text is from Kim's blog.  Please mention this blog if you give her a shout!

"Dayvid and Murielle were engaged on December 28th at a Denver Nuggets game, while the entire crowd watched on the jumbotron. And what better way to compliment a winter engagement than some winter engagement photos too! All photos were taken at the Ice Castles in the rocky mountain town of Silverthorne, Colorado. The session started off during the day, but we later returned for some nighttime photos in the illuminated castles as well. It may have been icy, but these photos are steamy! ;)

I’d also like to thank Petal and Bean, a fine floral design studio in Breckenridge, for giving us the heads up on the Ice Castles this year!

Dayvid and Murielle – thank you for making the trip to Silverthorne! It was great getting to know you both and to hear your wonderful story!

~keep smiling!
Kim"
