Colorado Engagement Photography Session

Today's post took place at a private residence, and is all about Gailan + Eric: Colorado Wedding Engagement Photography, with images courtesy of Matthew Speck Photography. It's the dreamy kind of place that is quiet and is surrounded by mountains and trees. Bonus points for the lake and casual feel that the coupled shared with us. The backdrop of the Colorado Rocky Mountains is a classic look that never gets old. Ask us how we can help you put together a custom wedding package that includes today's photographer!

The Future: Keystone Resort Wedding at the Alpenglow Stube

This couple plans on bringing their friends and family together to the base of the River Run Village at the Keystone Resort. From here, the guests will travel on two gondolas across two mountains to reach the Outpost on North Peak. The Ceremony and Reception will take place at the Alpenglow Stube. Next door is larger venue, Timber Ridge, but the "stube" has a much more intimate and romantic feeling. Timber Ridge is more dramatic with tall ceilings and large logs that create the atmosphere for a mountain top wedding at 11,400. I know the altitude because I checked an app when setting up weddings there a few years ago.

Thanks for checking out this blog and please contact us with any questions about this site, or planning a destination wedding in the Breckenridge and Vail area. Happy planning or mountain adventuring, whichever comes first!

[ Vendor ] Q&A w/ Katie Girtman of Studio Kiva Photography

Studio-Kiva-Photography_061513.jpg

Hiring a photographer for your wedding is one of the first things you start to plan as soon as you get engaged. Sometimes it can be a lengthy research process, with many emails requesting pricing lists, looking through wedding portfolios, or perusing through your friend's Facebook wedding album to see who they used for their wedding day. Either way it's a big decision because who ever you do choose will have that one chance to document your wedding and make sure to tell the best story of your day as possible. That's why we wanted to ask  local professional photographer Katie Girtman of Studio Kiva Photography a few questions about the ins and outs of the her wedding photo business in the mountains. [ studiokivawedding.com ]

Q and A with Katie Girtman of Studio Kiva Photography

Q.  How many years have you worked as a wedding photographer?

A.   I have worked as a wedding photographer for 24 years and I am in my early 40s and still young and fun! The photographer is usually with you a lot of time with your wedding so it is good to like there personality and have some fun!

Q and A with Katie Girtman of Studio Kiva

Q.  What's your contingency plan?  Do you have a back up camera?

A.   We always carry 4 or 5 cameras to every shoot with us as a back up because even the most expensive ones can go down.  Speaking of that it is really good to have top of the line cameras and not just an SLR that does not have a two compact flash card system.  Reason?  Compact flash cards can also go bad and if you have a two card slot system you can back one up directly in your camera, because you can't reshoot a wedding.  A lot of the photographers don't have this because they don't want to spend the money.  But to me this is all insurance.  We back up, back up and back up.  We have never lost images due to all our back up plans.  We also put back up copies at the safety deposit box at the bank and have had customers call us if they lose a disk or their house burned down in a forest fire we had the back up and made them another copy of their images.

Q and A with Katie Girtman of Studio Kiva

Q.  Can we hire you only for the ceremony and part of the reception and not the full night?

A.   We have all types of packages from full day, half day and elopement type packages.  Couples that are looking for a photographer it is good to meet them in person and feel comfortable with that person along with having a local photographer that has the knowledge for shooting in the mountains.

Q and A with Katie Girtman of Studio Kiva Photography

Q. What's one thing you'd like to tell all the couples talking to photographers about a wedding in Breckenridge?

A.   I also would like to say not someone that is going to drive up from Denver and get stuck in traffic coming up here but someone who is local and knows the area and lives in the area to really get the feel of being here in Breckenridge and the mountains.  I also believe that a good photographer will give you the images and not hold them over your head since they took the time to shoot them all!  We give all our couples the photos in color and black and white and no hidden fees!!

Q and A with Katie Girtman of Studio Kiva Photography

Q. Any unexpected or funny wedding moments recently?

A.    We could write a book on all the funny moments!  We stay in touch with our couples and they are life long friends.  One of the funniest moments is we had a woman forget to put her teeth in for the photos so we had to photo shop teeth!

Planning an elopement from around the world was easy for Camilla and Niklas, as they found us online, searching for how to book a dogsled tour for their destination wedding in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.  The couple from Sweden asked us to help them arrange a photographer, the bridal bouquet and boutonierre, the officiant, the transportation and the dog sled.

We met with the vendors at the barn a few days before the wedding, and made sure everything was set.  Details were worked out and all the ceremony planning was finalized.

There are many operators that offer snowmobiling, skiing, dog sledding and winter activities.  As a longtime Florist and Breckenridge wedding planner specializing in adventure weddings, we understand the nature of the mountains, how harsh the elements can be, and the need to secure quality services from reliable vendors that will see your vision through.

We are here to help you put all the pieces together to create fun-filled experiences that you'll want to remember for the rest of your lives.  How do you do that, you ask?  Well, for starters, you can sign up for one of our wedding planning packages that will help you source all the vendors you need, book the activities you want to do, and secure rental items you don't need to buy.

{Real Mountain Wedding} Camilla + Niklas: Dog Sled Adventure Wedding in Breckenridge, Colorado. | Photo courtesy of StudioKivaWedding.com.

You can choose between photo or video production packages, or both.  We suggest both.  We love still images, but video captures longer moments that still images just can't.  I've noticed that more than one bride saying they wish they had a video of the day, to see who all was there, and to see moments from the day.  The day will go fast, so make sure you're set up to capture it and enjoy for years to come through photos, videos and most importantly, the stories your guests will tell.

Or, as in this case, no guests will tell, but instead have fun photos and video of your adventure wedding in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.  Check back later for the video of this dogsled winter elopement in Breckenridge

Let's be honest here.  Weddings require planning, and planning means time.  Even elopements.  We  want to make this experience fun, easy and stress free for you. Each of our adventure wedding experiences are hand crafted by local seasoned professionals. From the handmade cake, to the handmade bouquet, each piece of your day is put together carefully, as we all understand how important quality is to you.

When you work with a longtime local who knows the venues, vendors and options up here, we pretty much take all the guess work out of the planning details for you.  We guide you and find out who you are as a couple and will find a way to create a wedding that is unique to the two of you.  Ask yourself, if you were a cake topper as a couple, what would it look like?

{real Mountain Wedding} Amber + Justin at Warren Station in Keystone, Colorado

When watching the tweets fly around one day, I saw this Keystone, Colorado wedding from photographer Autumn Lee of Dash Photography  and I just had to share it with you all.  You see, there are lots of different ways to dress up and celebrate your day, so here's today's version.  A bold and beautiful red, white and black color palette was used throughout the event.

Branding your event is a fun way to carry the theme of your wedding experience.  Let's first take a look at some of the details of the wedding, which are best captured before the wedding, as all the various pieces come together.

I like to hear the stories from the day, and to share any feedback or lessons learned, so here's what the bride had to say.

Q. Any funny or memorable moments from your wedding?

A. Well we did have a couple memorable moments throughout the week of our wedding. One of my bridesmaid got the wrong dress! It really was not a big deal and the dress was pretty and matched the other dresses just fine. The funny part about the mistake is that some close friends said "wow, you handled that really well, if I were you I would have freaked out!". Another very memorable moment was that my husband lost his wallet full of cash the night of his bachelor party. He called me the next morning in horrible regret of how drunk he had gotten.

Q.  Why the mountains?  What resources did you get inspiration or help from?

A.  My husband and I really love snowboarding and we enjoy the mountains and the laid back atmosphere it provides. To add a personal touch we labeled each table in our reception hall as a mountain we had boarded at (Vail, aspen, keystone, Breckenridge, copper, monarch, etc.). It was really cute. I got my inspiration from everywhere, I did not have just one or two resources. I also got a lot of ideas from oriental trader. I made a lot of our decorations and I got a lot of great ideas from oriental traders.

Q.  Any “hindsight 20/20″ advice you have for couples?

A. The whole week of my wedding I felt I was walking on clouds and my maid of honor had to really keep me on track to stay on our schedule. If I could give one tip of advice for future brides it would be to concentrate on completely enjoying the week of your wedding and it only happens once. It is hard enough to remember this week in your life so you want to soak up as many memorable moments as you can. It is really easy to get caught up in all the little details you want to get done but you have to delegate your to do list and just enjoy being the bride.  Throughout the week I felt as though nothing could touch me, nothing could rain on my parade. I think it was that mindset that kept anything from invading my joyous week.

And then, some questions that I sent to the photographer, Autumn Dash.  Here's what she had to say.

Q. What tips / advice would you give to a couple considering a destination wedding in Keystone or Summit County?

A. If you are doing a destination wedding-really make sure you make it easy and friendly for your guests...remember they are having to come from out of town as well. I don't suggest breaking up your ceremony and reception into 2 separate parts of the day because your guests may not have anywhere to go for 2-3 hours while you are "breaking".  If you are coming up to the mountains, really enjoy your stay and get into the relax mode that most of us have up here-go with the flow!

{Real Mountain Wedding} Amber + Justin in Keystone, Colorado // Dash Photography, www.dash-photography.net

Q. What are some fun ideas for engagement photos shoots in the mountains?

A. I am a big believer in making your engagement photos about you. Doing something together tat showcases you as a couple is always great. If you are big skiers, maybe a shoot around a ski lift would be fun. If you guys are avid readers, set up a picnic and scatter books around. Anything that you can do to bring "you" into it always makes for a great engagement session.

{Real Mountain Wedding} Amber + Justin in Keystone, Colorado // Dash Photography, www.dash-photography.net

Q. What kinds of questions would you recommend the bride and groom ask their potential photographers?

A. What is your shooting style, how do you direct the day, how long is the turn around time for getting my photos and products. Most magazines and blogs will tell you to ask all the "business style questions-insurance, back ups etc" but if you are a professional, these are no brainers, already covered and in the contract. You want to make sure you connect with your photographer on a personal level-you will be spending the whole day with them :)

{Real Mountain Wedding} Amber + Justin in Keystone, Colorado // Dash Photography, www.dash-photography.net

 Q. What's the best way to work with wedding photographers?

A. Just be our friends-we don't bite LOL

{Real Mountain Wedding} Amber + Justin in Keystone, Colorado // Dash Photography, www.dash-photography.net

Q. Favorite part of Colorado?  Favorite Restaurant in Denver?  And, one more.  Last concert seen.

A. Being a Texas gal, I really enjoy the 4 seasons Colorado has (even though I am not a snow fan LOL). I have yet to find a good restaurant here (sorry!! But you guys have nothing on the good comfort food of home!!). Last concert seen was probaby Jamey Johnson at Red Rocks....it's been awhile :)

The Keystone Ranch barns are an amazing set of buildings to be able to use as a backdrop for some photos.  Ask us how you can work with talented wedding photographers such as Colorado-based Kay Beaton, who after calling Summit County home for many years, has decided to try the front range.  She loves to work and by work, I mean go skiing, hiking and sharing our mountains with clients who are mountain folks themselves, and need a photographer who can follow them along the mountain adventure chosen for that particular shoot.

[ Photo Shoot Location ] The Barns at the Back Ranch in Keystone, Colorado | Destination Wedding, Summit County, Kay Beaton, Beaton Photography

You see, we are designing adventure wedding experiences for couples, families and planners wanting to craft personalized mountain gatherings, while saving both time and money.  When you work with our team, you'll have a team of local wedding pros to help and guide your planning, design your event theme, palette and to work out details of design style if you would like.

When asked about the barns in this collection of photos, she says that "we have three weddings coming up in September all at Keystone Ranch, I decided before wedding day I should check out the accessibility of these beautiful barns. I have seen lots of dynamic photos of them over the years, but have never been there myself.

So yesterday I ventured out and learned how beautiful it is - although they are a little hard to access if you're not a golfer or a bride! They are old historic barns smack between the 6th and 8th greens and it does take some "golfer etiquette" to get there backwards on the course. For couples that have booked a Keystone Ranch wedding, I highly recommend taking the 20 minutes to do couple photos out there at the barns!

I have photographed a few golf tournaments, and have learned to drive a golf cart backwards on the course…. I have learned lots of lessons from the beverage cart drivers as they do it all day everyday! AND with the brides I'll be sure to keep the plexiglass top all the way down and not risk a stray golf ball before the reception photos!"
