The Riverwalk Center and the Wedding Pros in Breckenridge

The Wedding Professionals during a speed networking event, hosted by the Breckenridge Resort Chamber at the Beaver Run Resort and Conference Center.

Today in Breckenridge, I went up to the Wedding Professionals speed networking event at the Beaver Run Resort and Conference Center.   I met some new folks, two guys that run photo booths, separate companies, that are based in the Vail Valley.  Plus, I got to see local venue managers, a videographer (holding the baby above) and a rental company representative.  These folks made the effort to see who's doing what around town.  And we had two minutes to do it!

The Wedding Professionals during a speed networking event, hosted by the Breckenridge Resort Chamber at the Beaver Run Resort and Conference Center.

We had our meet up in the Imperial Ballroom, the most popular room at Beaver Run for weddings.  You see, from this room, you have mountains all around you, including the lower slopes of peak 9.  A chairlift out the door makes this venue a no-brainer for a convenient venue for a winter wedding that requires ski-in, ski-out, slopeside and in-town amenities.

The Blue River Plaza is on the other side of the Riverwalk Center. It's a natural attraction that the kids love to walk in, hop from rock to rock and just be kids.

Now that we have another wedding season under our belt, we'll be updating our vendor directory with fresh new options for mountain shin digs.  And, if you are getting married and want some help figuring it all out, please contact us right now!

I create one-of-a-kind wedding films for my clients telling your unique love story through my camera lens and editing. Q. Any advice for couples planning their wedding in the Breckenridge area?

A. The advice that I would give to couples planning a Breckenridge wedding is to keep in mind the environment of this unique mountain setting. Alert your guests ahead of time about traveling and how the altitude can affect people differently. Let people know about things to do to curb altitude sickness, like drinking plenty of fluids leading up to their trip and while they’re here. Also, let them know about the oxygen bar or oxygen rental services – these can be a great help to those suffering from headaches and other altitude-related symptoms. When traveling from out of state, it also helps people to acclimatize by possibly staying in Denver for a night before traveling up to Breckenridge’s higher elevation.

The other piece of advice I like to share with couples getting married here is to try to find local professionals to help you with your wedding day. Traveling to the mountains from Denver or other Front Range areas can be tricky, and occasionally vendors driving up from this area can run into challenges getting here. One specific example that I’ve personally witnessed was a couple having a winter wedding in Breckenridge, who had hired their ceremony musicians from Denver. Unfortunately the musicians got stuck on I-70 and couldn’t make it through the tunnel and completely missed the wedding ceremony. There are so many great wedding professionals here locally that know the area, and know all the ins and outs of our mountain community, that you won’t have to stress about whether your musician, or photographer, or DJ is going to make it here.

Q. Ski or snowboard? What do you do in the summertime for fun?

A. I am a skier in the wintertime. But the summers are my favorite here in the mountains.  The weather is somewhere around perfect I believe, although growing up in the Midwest with summertime heat and humidity really makes me appreciate the mild, dry climate of the mountains in the summer. I love that it in the middle of summer, there are days that require lots of sunscreen while soaking in the mountain sunshine, then evenings that cool off so much that you may need your fleece to throw on when the sun goes down. My husband and I love to go camping and 4-wheeling in our Jeep in the summertime. There are so many beautiful places right here in our backyard to explore. I also love catching the local concerts around the area – nothing like being outside, taking in the scenery, while listening to music over a cold local microbrew or a glass of wine!

Q. Top 3 family-friendly hikes for families visiting for the wedding?

A. I’m going give you my favorite 4-wheel drive trails instead, since that’s one of my favorite hobbies. One of the easiest scenic trails to drive in the area is Boreas Pass Rd. This can be driven easily in most vehicles, (although 4wheel drive is usually better), and has some great history and amazing views. Georgia Pass is another trail I love, although slightly more difficult and takes you up to the continental divide at the top – again with great views on both sides. Renting a Jeep is a great way to explore trails while visiting, or contact one of the companies running Jeep tours for a guided trip.

Q. What’s an important factor that couples don’t want to overlook?

A. An important factor for couples to keep in mind, as your planning for the big day is to give yourself ample time to get everything done. Plan a little more time than you think you need for hair and makeup and getting ready, or add in a little extra time for traveling from location to location. The last thing you want to feel on your wedding day is rushed, so if you’re always asking someone what time it is or running late, you’re not going to really enjoy all the special time with your family, friends, and loved ones. The day will inevitably go by fast, so the more you can soak in all the memorable moments, the better!

Q. Any advice for couples planning their wedding in the Breckenridge area?

A. I always encourage the bride and groom to come see our space before hand and to experience some of our services. Particularly, the bride can have a practice run on her hair and make-up, so there will not be any surprises on the big day.

Also, if the practice is done on the day of the rehearsal dinner, then after the updo, our stylist will let her hair down and style it, so she is ready and looking beautiful for the rehearsal.

The purpose of the Brecknridge Bridal Bash is to invite brides and grooms planning their destination wedding in the Colorado Rocky Mountains to meet local wedding pros, tour ceremony and reception venues, and taste and drink the yumminess that exits in the local restaurants.

The art of mountain travel takes practice.  You learn the curves of the road, where the icy spots are, and where the bathroom stops are.  Renting a car and driving up the mountains is fun, but if you're not up for the adventure and sometimes white-knuckle experience of alpine driving, then we suggest you leave it local experts.

Q. Any advice for couples planning their wedding in the Breckenridge area?

A. My biggest piece of advice is to make sure to plan your wedding around you, the wedding couple.  The wedding celebration is about your friends and families coming together to celebrate you, so if you can plan aspects that communicate your likes and who you are as a couple through food, through location, through flowers, through activities etc...then everyone get's to truly celebrate and experience the two of you.  This is not to say that you can pay no attention to certain details such as food and any special needs of your friends and family, however, don't plan the whole meal around those special needs...plan around the two of you and incorporate their needs.

Q. Ski or snowboard? What do you do in the summertime for fun?

A. In the winter I'm a skier...definitely  have not been enjoying as much as I should be...so that's the goal for 2012/2013, get on the slopes more.  In the summertime, I enjoy taking my dog Buddy out kayaking on Lake Dillon, camping with friends, hiking and my new found love of water skiing.

Q. Top 3 family-friendly hikes for families visiting for the wedding?

A. The biggest piece of advice would be to hold off on Quandary until after your wedding!  I had a client a few years ago where the "boys" went on the Quandary hike the day before the wedding and unfortunately the groom had come back with a few broken bones and was in a wheelchair for the ceremony.  Definitely a memorable experience for all involved, however, let's make other memories that are less painful!

I don't really know the names of the trails, but there are some nice hiking grounds that take off from the Ice Rink in Breckenridge, there's the Blair Witch loop off of Tiger Road by the old Dredge Boat and a very nice hike is the Peaks trail from Peak 8 in Breckenridge to Frisco and then take the bus back to Breck.

Kevin talks to the local wedding pros from the Breckenridge Resort Chamber at the barn.

Q.  What’s an important factor that couples don’t want to overlook?

A. So many times I've seen couples more stressed out about the whole process that they cannot enjoy it.  I would say to make sure to begin getting your ducks in a row early on so that you can have fun in the planning process and therefore ensure that your special day is fun and not a stressful experience.

If you are a "control freak" perhaps this is a great opportunity to delegate to someone whether that be a friend or a professional wedding planner/coordinator to do this for you.  Make sure that both of you are involved in the planning together as you don't want a huge surprise on the day of, but also it's a great way for the two of you to enjoy each other while planning for this special day.  Please remember that you do not have to try and "out do" your sister's wedding or your cousin's wedding...those things won't ever matter 20 years down the road, however, capturing the essence of the two of you on your special day will.

If that means having a celebration for 300 people or if that means a more intimate celebration of 30 people do what is best for you not just to get a "one-up" on someone else.  Finally, don't miss out on the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful space of Breckenridge.

When you plan a "planning trip' make sure to add an extra hour or an extra day or two to enjoy all that Breckenridge has to offer.  Go for a small hike and plan a romantic picnic, visit the museums or mines if history is your passion, enjoy local art at the many galleries, take a moment to grab a local cup of java and sit on the natural rocks by the Blue River listening to the sounds of the water, walk up and down Main Street searching for those unique shops you know your friends and family members absolutely have to visit while they are here, catch the local entertainment at either of the local live theaters or a concert at the Riverwalk Center.  Whatever you do make sure to make it different from your routine back home so that your entire memory of your special day can be relived through pictures, stories and the moments you create together!
